OMTRA is a non-profit organization run by a volunteer board of directors.
What’s involved?
The OMTRA Board of Directors is comprised of volunteers from various municipalities across Ontario. All Board members are directly engaged in the collection and administration of municipal property taxes, utilities, Provincial Offences Act fines and other municipal revenues – in short – your municipal counterparts and your peers who work in revenue collections.
Board members meet 5 times per year to make decisions about the services and educational offerings that OMTRA delivers to its members, and how we communicate and advocate on behalf of our members. Board members also plan our annual conference, conduct seminars and webinars, and manage and administer the association’s budget.
Serving as a volunteer Board member provides you with opportunities to play an active role in the decision-making and future of your professional association, to share your learnings and your expertise with your municipal colleagues, and to enhance your personal professional development and social sphere.
What are the benefits?
Expand and sharpen your skill set
Serving on a non-profit board of directors will expand your skill set. Just by being involved, you’re sure to learn more about marketing, governance, finance, branding, recruiting volunteers, interacting with provincial officials and association members, and much more.
Gain valuable management experience
Non-profit boards are “working boards”. By joining the board and volunteering to take on specific roles, you can gain the experience you need for your professional development. In particular, non-profit boards provide opportunities for leadership. Serving on a committee or being an officer of the board or taking the lead on a board initiative will give you critical leadership experience that is always a professional benefit. Most corporations will want their senior leaders to serve on a Board to show community engagement.
Grow your professional network
Joining a non-profit board gives you the opportunity for a meaningful connection with other board members and people interested in the same cause. The connections you make as a board member add to your network in a way that expands your own professional network.
What is the time commitment for Board meetings?
There are five meetings per year which generally span two days. Meetings are held in the months of February, April, July, September and October/November. Meetings take place during the week and only involve weekends when the Board meeting is in conjunction with an OMTRA event. Typically that means that three or four meetings a year will require two days away from work. Some work is required outside of the meeting schedule in relation to your role with the Association.
What are the duties?
President
The role of the President is to act as the head of the Ontario Municipal Tax and Revenue Association representing the members with various government ministries, agencies and boards. The President will be the spokesperson for the Association and will also provide guidance and direction to the Board of Directors and membership.

The duties of the First Vice-President are to support the President in their duties and temporarily assume presidential duties in the absence or disability of the President; mentoring the Second Vice-President, Chair of the Fall Conference Meeting and AGM, and assuming any other roles as required.

The duties of the Second Vice-President include temporarily assuming the role of President in the case of absence or disability of the President and the First Vice-President, assisting the President and First Vice-President in the discharging of their duties and assuming any other duties as required.
