The Opportunity
Reporting to the Finance Manager/Deputy Treasurer, the Tax Collector manages the municipal tax system, getting all bills prepared and monitoring the collection of property tax bills, adjusting for supplemental adjustments, writeoffs, and any other property tax or assessment related adjustments. The Tax Collector also is responsible for the front counter at the Municipal Operations Centre (MOC), tending to customer enquiries, handling cash/debit transactions, and answering/directing switchboard calls. This position also will assist and fill-in performing Service Ontario customer service transactions.

Status: Full-Time
Hours of Work: 35 hours/ week
Days of Work: Monday to Friday
Pay Range: $29.13 - $34.08
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain the sub-ledger; execute the tax billing and collection functions
- Authorize and process the cancellation, refund, severances, consolidations, reduction or rebate of taxes
- Update and maintain records, generate and analyze reports to support decision making by the municipality. Includes reconciling tax accounts, school boards, PIL and required journal entries on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis
- Perform municipal reception and other related duties, as necessary or assigned. This includes customer service for both walk in traffic and switchboard, processing various payments and cash handling, and Service Ontario customer service inquiries and transactions
- Interpret and communicate with ratepayers as well as OPTA, MPAC, law firms and other municipal agencies
Qualifications
- 2 year post secondary education in Finance or Accounting
- Municipal Tax Administration Program (MTAP)
- 1-3 years financial experience
- Strong customer service skills – high degree of ability to deal with external clients; as well as ability to deal with potential difficult taxpayers
- Computer literacy in a Windows environment utilizing Microsoft Office applications with intermediate proficiency
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to work independently and in a group setting
- Mathematical aptitude and analytical skills applicable for various financial and accounting functions
